The Flexible Toaster (2018)
How can the toaster be less cumbersome, being an almost optional appliance, in our daily lives?

A flexible toaster, aiming to reduce the surface area of a toaster, but also allowing to toast other breads than sandwich bread slices : the traditional baguette, pastries, or other breads too thick for conventional toasters can be toasted easily.

The toaster is made of a silicone-fibreglass composite fabric, resistant to 400°C, and a flexible 1000 ampere resistor glued to this fabric.

Material and textures inspirations

Components

1 - Polypropylene power supply box, containing all the components necessary for the toaster's operation (electronic board, automatic start/stop device, brass rivets etc.).
2 - Stainless steel bars inlaid directly in the insulating silicone, keeping the bread away from the resistance.
3 - Two flexible 1000 W resistors directly connected to the to the power supply box
4 - Silicone-kevlar panels, first thermal insulation layer of the resistors, first flexibility material in the toaster
5 - Kevlar - dyed glass fibre (fireproof textile - resistant to up to 400°C) stuffed with insulating polyester wadding and sewn with a brown silicone piping to reinforce the thermal insulation (kevlar - wadding - kevlar)
6 - Off-white, slightly yellow silicone base assembled with the textile and the case. Rigid plastic screw holes were placed in it to assemble it with the rigid plastic case.
